Gavin slams Bank of Scotland bosses over branch closure

Gavin Newlands MP has criticised Bank of Scotland bosses over their decision to continue with their intended closure of the Glasgow Road branch in Paisley.

The Bank of Scotland’s decision to press ahead with their plans for closure of the branch comes despite Gavin's meeting with representatives of the bank in his office in Westminster, which was followed up with a meeting with the local community in Paisley. At these meetings bank bosses were urged to reverse their decision to close a much-valued branch in the town.

The Bank of Scotland previously announced that they planned on closing their branch at Glasgow Road in Paisley and had suggested that affected customer should move on to digital banking or travel over a mile and half to the next nearest branch.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“It is deeply disappointing to learn that the Bank of Scotland bosses have failed to accept the strong case put forward by members of the local community as to why the Glasgow Road branch should have remained open – their decision will severely inconvenience many people.

“This branch is vital for the local community and the option to move onto digital banking or travel a considerable distance to the next nearest branch, is not a viable option for an area that has a significant elderly population.

“The Bank of Scotland did appear to accept many of the criticisms levied at them by members of the local community at the meeting but, despite this, they have failed to offer any realistic solution.

“I have written to the Bank of Scotland to express my disappointment with their decision and I have urged them to reconsider and strengthen their offer to customer who will be significantly affected by this disappointing decision.”
