Gavin backs Erskine's bid for National Lottery Award
July 7, 2015
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, is urging the people of Renfrewshire to back Erskine Care Home’s bid to win the National Lottery Award for Sport by logging on and voting online.
The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery funded projects. In the Best Sports Project Category of the 2015 National Lottery Awards, Erskine Hospital is up against North Wales Crusaders Wheelchair Team, The Girl Can, Sport England TASS, I Will if You Will, The Wave Project and SportsScotland Community Sports Hubs.
The Erskine Commonwealth Games held in all five Erskine care homes last year not only left a lasting legacy of wonderful memories but has resulting in the veterans’ charity making the final of the National Lottery Awards 2015.
Events that took place during the two week Erskine Commonwealth Games included an opening day torch relay race, opening, closing and medal ceremonies, food, music, crafts and entertainment from throughout the commonwealth and sporting competitions including boccia bowls, shot putt, weightlifting, netball and that much renowned sport of balloon tennis!
The MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North is urging his constituents – and everyone across Renfrewshire – to log on and vote online to help Erskine Hospital win. Voting is open at www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards/sports until 29th July. The winner will be invited to appear on national television and take home a £2,000 cash prize.
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“Erskine is a charity that has provided care and support to our veterans across Scotland since 1916 – they given a lot to our communities and country, we now can do our bit to help Erskine by logging on and voting for them.
“Erskine has beat off stiff competition from 620 organisations to become a finalist for this year’s National Lottery Award for Sport, which is testament to the dedication and hard work of their staff.
“Best of luck to everyone at Erskine. I hope the people of Renfrewshire and beyond get behind this worthy charity and back Erskine’s bid!”
Steve Conway, Chief Executive of Erskine, says winning the prestigious National Lottery Award and having their work showcased on national television would be an honour:
”I am delighted that Erskine has reached the final of the National Lottery Awards.
“The Erskine Commonwealth Games - which we held thanks to Lottery funding - was a tremendous success and all of our veterans enjoyed taking part in new sporting and cultural activities.
“It is wonderful that all the hard work and dedication that went into organising the games is being recognised.”
