Renfrewshire MP delivers maiden speech in the Commons
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, delivered his maiden speech to the House of Commons, as MPs debated the UK Government’s budget on Monday.
Gavin used his maiden speech as an opportunity to tell MPs about the great towns and villages of the constituency, saying that “Renfrewshire is a county with a proud past and a promising future. He went on to rail against the UK Government’s welfare reform and austerity programme, epitomised in the budget of last week.
The new MP also paid tribute to his predecessor Jim Sheridan, telling the house that Mr Sheridan was a “dedicated MP for 14 years” and wished Mr Sheridan, his family and his staff all the very best for the future.
Gavin finished his speech by calling on the UK Government to “stop playing games with the Scottish people” and act to devolve the crucial powers to the Scottish Parliament “without caveat, without veto and without delay”.
Commenting after his maiden speech, Gavin Newlands MP said:
“I am glad that I have finally been able to deliver my maiden speech to the House of Commons as we debated the UK Government’s budget.
“It was great opportunity to speak about the great town and villages that I represent in Renfrewshire, to pay tribute to my predecessor Jim Sheridan and to speak out against the economic and political folly of the UK Government’s budget.
“I look forward to now being able to fully participate in the parliamentary business of the House and to be a strong voice for the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire North.”
