Gavin hands over winning flag to Gallowhill Primary School

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has visited Gallowhill Primary School to hand over a flag which was designed by pupils and which was flown outside Parliament Square, during the state opening of the new Parliament.

The 2015 Flag Project, run by the Houses of Parliament aims to connect young people with the democratic process and the UK’s parliamentary heritage. Over 450 primary schools across the country took part in the project, developed to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort parliament of 1265

Lili McLaughlan – with help from her friend Kerryn McGowan – designed the flag as a way of capturing and representing aspects of their local community.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“There were a number of highlights during my first few weeks of being elected as the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire – however, one of them was certainly seeing the Gallowhill Primary School flag being flown outside Parliament Square.”

“Lili, Kerryn and the rest of Gallowhill Primary School did a fantastic job in designing a flag which best captured everything positive about their school and Renfrewshire.”

“I was delighted to attend the school assembly to formally hand the flag back over to the school and to hear more about their trip down to London to see their flag being flown outside Parliament.”
