Gavin leads fresh calls against the renewal of Trident

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has joined other anti-nuclear campaigners to launch a new campaign which is calling on Prime Minister David Cameron to respect the democratic will of the Scottish people, and cancel plans to renew Trident.

The ‘Respect Scotland’ campaign aims to pressurise the UK government to cancel the £100bn proposal to renew Trident nuclear weapons. The campaign is set to tour Scotland to speak with local MPs and MSP who support the peace movement.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“Alongside 58 out of 59 Scottish MPs, the Scottish Parliament have also led calls against these trident nuclear weapons being renewed.”

“In addition, poll after poll are also showing that the vast majority of the Scottish people are also against the UK Government wasting £100 billion on renewing these outdated weapons.”

“Whilst the Prime Minister is cutting vital services to pay for these nuclear bombs. We could use the £100 billion to pay the wages of 70,000 nurses or 60,000 primary teachers for 50 years.”

“That’s why I am happy to lend my continued support to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and lead fresh calls on David Cameron to respect the will of the Scottish people and cancel plans to renew Trident.”
