"I'll vote against austerity", Gavin pledges
Gavin Newlands MP has reaffirmed that he will vote against the UK Government’s ‘Charter for Fiscal Responsibility’, ahead of the debate and vote which are due to take place in the House of Commons today.
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has been consistently opposed to the Tory plans to rubber-stamp another wave of austerity – as have the SNP group of MPs at Westminster.
The Renfrewshire MP joined calls earlier in the week for Labour to U-turn and join with the SNP to fight the Tory’s latest austerity proposals. Later that day the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, John McDonnell, reversed Labour’s position and confirmed that his MPs would join the SNP in voting against Osborne’s fiscal charter.
Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“I will vote against the Tories’ Charter for Fiscal Austerity in the House of Commons for two simple reasons: it is bad for Scotland; and it is bad for the people and communities of Renfrewshire – it’s as simple as that.
“The Tories’ ‘Charter for Fiscal Responsibility’ is the latest attempt by a cuts-obsessed UK Government to impose a state of perpetual austerity in the UK – as the Bill would commit the UK to running a surplus above and beyond the deficit being eliminated.
“The UK Government’s austerity plans are of choice, not of necessity. These plans are completely unnecessary, entirely ideologically-driven and show complete disregard for the devastating impact that these cuts have on our families and communities.
“The Tories’ austerity programme has sought to balance the books on the backs of the poor, the most vulnerable and average Scots who want to get on in life and secure the best possible life for their families – and the Tories impose these cuts with a the lip service of ‘all in this together.”
