"Obscenity of Trident must not be renewed", Gavin says

Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has reaffirmed his opposition to the renewal of the ‘obscenity’ of a new-age of nuclear weapons of mass destruction – and the Renfrewshire MP will support a motion in the House of Commons calling for MoD’s renewal plans to be scrapped.

The UK Government has made its intentions to renew the nuclear arsenal based on the Clyde clear – on a like for a like basis with Trident – which will cost up to £167 billion.

The SNP Westminster group secured a debate in the House of Commons ahead of Tories preparations to have a vote next year which would enable the MoD to proceed with a full renewal programme – giving the green light to dumping the deadliest nuclear arsenal in history just 30 minutes from Scotland’s biggest city, despite opposition from the Scottish Government, the Scottish Labour Party and across civil society.

Gavin Newlands, the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“The obscenity of Trident nuclear weapons of mass destruction should not and must not be renewed.

“The renewal of Trident, the deadliest nuclear arsenal in history, is nothing more than a Westminster vanity project with a price tag of up to £167 billion. It is a weapon of the past and belongs in the past.

“The threat to the UK does not come from an expansionist rival nation state, the major threat – as we have seen all too starkly recently – comes from ideological extremists. Trident is therefore an immoral, obscene and redundant weapons system.

“Even if a Prime Minister was senseless enough to use these indiscriminate weapons, no man, woman or child would ever live to tell the tale as it is a war that nobody will win.”
