Gavin blasts Trident renewal costs

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has reacted angrily to a new report from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) which suggests that the cost of the UK government renewing Trident nuclear weapons has increased to £200 billion.
The UK Government is determined to proceed with the project – even with this new extraordinary price tag – and plans to dump the nuclear arsenal on the Clyde for the next 50 years despite opposition from the Scottish Government, 57 of Scotland’s 59 MPs, churches, trades unions and civic society.
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“This new report confirms what we’ve all suspected – that the cost of renewing these Trident nuclear weapons has completely spiralled out of control.
“At a time when this Conservative government is pushing through policies that are causing severe heartache and stress for the most vulnerable in our society, it’s absurd to think that they are committing £200 billion on these outdated and immoral weapons.
“Trident renewal has always been utterly indefensible - and these costs will almost certainly only go one way from here - even further up.''
