Gavin calls for refreshed effort in tackling racism in sport

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has used a speech at Westminster to praise the efforts that have been taken to address racism in sport, but has called for more work to be done in eliminating all forms of discrimination.
Speaking at a special event to mark the 20th anniversary of ‘Show Racism the Red Card’, Gavin praised the work of the organisation but sent a reminder that still to many young sport athletes are victimised due to some of prejudice.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“For 20 years, ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ has been challenging all forms of discrimination, and I believe that we’re a much more tolerant, respectable and welcoming society as a result.
“However, racism in sport is still prevalent and we’ve still got a lot to do to eliminate prejudice from sport and wider society.
“We should never remain silent when we see someone being the victim of some form of discrimination, and we should challenge these attitudes in whatever form they take.”
