SNP Renfrewshire Call for Remain Vote

Last weekend, SNP politicians from across Renfrewshire joined local activists to campaign for a ‘Remain’ vote in the upcoming EU Referendum which is due to be held on Thursday.

Gavin Newlands MP, Derek Mackay MSP, George Adam MSP and Tom Arthur MSP led a group of local activists in Gallowhill to speak with voters about how voting to ‘Remain’ is in the best interests for Renfrewshire and Scotland.

The EU Referendum is due to take place on Thursday 23rd of June.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“I was delighted to join my SNP colleagues and local activists from across Renfrewshire to campaign for a Remain vote for Thursday’s referendum on whether we continue to be a member of the EU.

“The EU safeguards certain rights such as paid holiday and maternity leave. If we vote to walk away from Europe, the Tories will have complete control and freedom to remove vital working rights that we take for granted.

“A ‘Remain’ vote is the best choice for Renfrewshire and Scotland. It will ensure that we can continue to work with our European neighbours to tackle issues such as global terrorism and climate change.

Derek Mackay, MSP for Renfrewshire North and West, said:

“Being in Europe is a force for good for the Scottish economy. Over 336,000 Scottish jobs are linked with the EU, and Scottish businesses are free to trade with other EU countries without the burden of unnecessary red tape and restrictions.

“A ‘Remain’ vote is good for Scottish businesses and jobs. Voting to ‘Leave’ will be disastrous for the Scottish economy and will throw us in a very uncertain future.

George Adam, MSP for Paisley, said:

“The EU is not a perfect institution by any means, but it does an important job and one which doesn’t necessary receive the attention that it deserves.

“Scotland is due to benefit from £1.7 billion in EU funding over the next five years to support local jobs, boost skills and employability, and invest in research and innovation.

“A ‘Remain’ vote is the positive and progressive choice that local households can make on Thursday.”

Tom Arthur, MSP for Renfrewshire South, said:

“The official ‘Leave’ campaign – headed by Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage – have ran a shameful campaign which has played on people’s fears.

“They have exploited the refugee crisis for their own political gain and purposely created an impression that all immigration is a burden.

“Renfrewshire has a proud track record of welcoming people from all over the world. On Thursday, I would encourage local people to reject the divisive politics of Nigel Farage, and vote to continue our membership of the EU.”
