Gavin lends his backing to Refugee Week

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has provided his backing to a campaign which seeks to celebrate the contribution that refugees have made to our communities.

From 20th to 26th June, Refugee Week 2016 will celebrate the welcome shown to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, and seek to encourage and inspire communities to continue to welcome new arrivals in the weeks, months and years to come.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“The humanitarian crisis has devastated the lives of so many people but in parallel to these heart-breaking events there have been acts of kindness shown by our communities who have opened their arms to help those affected.

“Renfrewshire showed the warmest of welcomes to our new neighbours who were affected by the refugee crisis. Local people did everything and anything to help those refugees settle into life in Renfrewshire.

“Refugee Week 2016 aims to celebrate the welcome that was shown by communities, like Renfrewshire, to those that arrived in the UK last year. The humanitarian crisis is still on-going and I have often argued that there’s still so much that we can do to help those caught up in Syria or in one of the refugee camps. Refugee Week seeks to encourage and inspire communities to continue to open their arms to those refugees who have been through so much.

“I am proud to support Refugee Week and would encourage all to get involved with the campaign.”
