Gavin Newlands Highlights Problems of Online Abuse

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has spoken at Westminster about the problem of online abuse and the impact that it has on those on the receiving end of such ‘poisonous and hateful’ messages.

During the debate, Gavin spoke about how online abuse affects people of all ages, including detailing the serious problem of cyberbullying and revenge porn.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“The internet and social media have become a staple part of our daily lives, and the overwhelming majority of people use it to communicate with others in a polite and respectable manner. However, like a lot of things, there’s always a few who ruin it for everyone else, and unfortunately social media has a significant minority who behave in abusive and poisonous manner.

“Online abuse affects people of all ages and from all backgrounds. We should be particularly concerned that bullies are exploiting the internet to allow them to extend their bullying beyond the classroom, and also allowing sick individuals to post indecent and sexual images of others online.

“No one should have to go home from work or school and experience bullying behaviour online. As well as offering support to the victims of online bullying, we also have to take serious action on the perpetrators of this vicious, poisonous and ultimately cowardly behaviour.”
