Gavin attends anti-Trident rally in Westminster

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, attended a CND Stop Trident Parliamentary Lobby in Westminster on Wednesday along with his SNP colleagues to make clear his objection to renewing the UK’s nuclear weapons.

Gavin will attend a CND rally in Paisley on Saturday and will be speaking against the renewal of Trident.

MPs will next Monday (18th July) be asked to vote on whether or not construction work should be given the green light for replacing the fleet of nuclear submarines at Faslane at a cost of £205 billion. Mr Newlands has previously signalled his intention to vote against the renewal of Trident nuclear weapons.

The UK Government is determined to proceed with the project and plans to dump the nuclear arsenal on the Clyde for the next 50 years despite opposition from the Scottish Government, 57 of Scotland’s 59 MPs, churches, trades unions and civic society.

Gavin Newlands commented: “It was a pleasure to attend CND’s Stop Trident mass lobby in Westminster to make clear my objection to these abhorrent weapons of mass destruction.”

“Local constituents should be left in no doubt that I will be voting against the UK Government spending billions of pounds on acquiring a new fleet of Trident nuclear weapons.”

“At a time when this Conservative government is pushing through policies that are causing severe heartache and stress for the most vulnerable in our society, it’s absurd to think that they are committing £200 billion on these outdated and immoral weapons.
