Gavin Newlands MP challenges UK Government over lack of detail over Brexit

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has slammed the UK government for failing to come up with a coherent plan for Brexit despite two months passing since the EU referendum.

During an urgent statement to the House of Commons by the Secretary of State for Brexit, David Davis MP, Gavin challenged the government to provide businesses in Renfrewshire with the necessary assurance that they are calling for.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“Two months have passed since the EU referendum and the UK government have still not told us what Brexit is going to look like.

“In the immediate aftermath of the EU referendum, I wrote to all businesses in the constituency to ask them what I could do to help them following the EU referendum result. I also met with a number of businesses over the summer and all are calling for some clarity as to what Brexit will mean.

“However, the Secretary of State for Brexit returned from his summer holiday and provided us with no clear plan on what Brexit is going to look like. The lack of detail and planning provided makes it incredibly difficult for our businesses to plan for the future.

“In contrast, the Scottish Government have attempted to provide as much assurance and stability as possible. Over the summer, they have appointed a dedicated Minister for Brexit, established a Council of Advisors, accelerated funding and additional business support as a way of stimulating the economy following Brexit and opened dialogue with other EU leaders.

“Whereas the Scottish Government have got to work following the EU Referendum, it’s clear that the UK Government are still caught in the headlights and have no idea what to do with Brexit.”
