Gavin Newlands MP sends pupils’ message to Minister
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has written to the Secretary of State for International Development, Priti Patel MP, regarding the ‘Send My Friend To School’ campaign, which is run by The Global Campaign for Education.
Gavin has questioned the Secretary of State on what the UK government is doing to ensure that every child receives a good quality education, particularly children affected by natural disasters and conflicts.
The pupils from St Fillan’s Primary School in Houston recently wrote to Gavin asking him to lend his support to the campaign, which is focused on speaking out for the tens of millions of children who are living through crises and missing out on education because of conflict, natural disaster and other emergencies. As part of the campaign, the pupils of St Fillan’s Primary School produced art work which contains the important messages they want to send to world leaders to take action on this issue.
Gavin Newlands MP said: “I want to thank the pupils and teachers of St Fillan’s Primary School for bringing this campaign to my attention and I was delighted to support the ‘Send My Friend To School’ Campaign.”
“Worldwide, the numbers of children displaced from their homes and schools by emergencies is at an all-time high. It is important that the UK government does its part in ensuring that every child receives a good quality education. This is why I have written to the Secretary of State for International Development regarding the UK’s investment in Education in Emergencies fund and have asked the government to sign up to the Safe Schools Declaration, which has so far been signed by 56 countries.”
