SNP working to end pension inequality: Tory figures on women's pensions wrong
The Scottish National Party has today unveiled independent research showing Tory figures on pension inequality are wrong and have called for immediate action to help the millions of women born in the 1950s who have been denied their pension.
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has responded to this report and called on the UK Government to correct their past mistakes and take action to help the 2.6 million women affected by changes made to the State Pension.
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“This independently commissioned report by the SNP shows that the UK Government can afford to reinstate the pensions for those 2.6 million women across the UK, including 8,100 women living in Renfrewshire that have been affected.
“This report provides the UK Government with five options to help them correct their past mistakes and enable them to deliver dignity in retirement. One of these options would allow a return to the 1995 Pensions Act and would slow the rise of the state pension age for women to reach 65 by 2021. This would cost £8 billion – far below the £30 billion figure often quoted by this Tory government.
“I know through my own work on the WASPI campaign that these changes have pushed many of these women into a financially vulnerable position, and the Tories can no longer run away from this problem."
