Gavin Newlands MP urges 16 & 17 year-olds to make sure they are registered to vote
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, is urging 16 and 17 year-olds to ensure they are registered to vote.
Sixteen and seventeen year-olds are now eligible to vote in Scottish elections, including the local government elections taking place on the 4th of May 2017.
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“The 2014 Independence Referendum showed the interest that young people have in the political process and it was only right that the Scottish Government changed the law to allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote in the 2014 Independence Referendum and the 2016 Scottish Parliament elections.
“I was delighted to see these changes as I have long been a campaigner for votes at 16. The UK Government have still to catch-up and allow young people to be able to vote in Westminster elections but in the meantime the 2017 Local Government elections are fast approaching.
“For the first time, 16 and 17 year-olds will be able to cast their votes in the Council elections on 4 May, but it’s important that they ensure they are on the Electoral Register.
“It’s important everyone, including young people, make sure their voice is heard next May. If people are unsure whether they are registered or information can be found at: www.grampian-vjb.gov.uk/electoral-register”
