Gavin Newlands MP pledges his support to ending HIV and AIDS

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, his pledged his support to tackling HIV and AIDS on a global stage.

Gavin has recently met with staff from Stop AIDS – a network of UK agencies who work together to try and secure a global response to HIV and AIDS.

Last year, world leaders committed to new Global Goals, including a target to end AIDS by 2030. However, without increased financial and political support, UNAIDS estimates the number of HIV infections will raise significantly.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“I am pledging my support in the work that Stop AIDS and others are doing in their work towards a world without AIDS and HIV.

“There has been a lot of positive work taken to help tackling these deadly diseases and it’s important that parliamentarians and governments continue to reaffirm their own commitment to tackling AIDS and HIV. It is disappointing that last year for the first time in five years international funding towards combating AIDS and HIS had decreased. This includes a fall in funding from the UK of about 12% between 2014 and 2015.

“The recent pledge to the Global Fund from the UK is a positive indication that the UK government will continue to fund HIV, but this financial contribution will be most effective if backed up by political and programmatic leadership.

“This is not a party political campaign but it is important that the UK Government steps up their response to tackling HIV and AIDS.”
