Gavin Newlands MP praises Daily Mile

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has welcomed a new Scottish Parliament report which shows that 180,000 children in over 1,000 primary schools across Scotland are doing the Daily Mile challenge.

The concept was developed in Scotland by former Pride of Britain Teacher of the Year winner Elaine Wyllie, and has since been successfully introduced in the rest of the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands. Encouraging children to get at least 15 minutes of exercise a day improves their physical, emotional and social health, and helps to fight childhood obesity.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“I am delighted to see that so many school children are taking part in the Daily Mile challenge. The concept, which encourages children to walk or run a mile each day, was developed in Scotland, and has since been successfully introduced in the rest of the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“Encouraging children to get at least 15 minutes of exercise a day improves their physical, emotional and social health, and helps to fight childhood obesity.

“I firmly believe that all Primary Schools should be participating in this great programme.”
