Gavin Newlands reacts to detention centre announcement

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has reacted to the announcement from the UK Government they will not appeal against the decision of Renfrewshire Council to refuse planning permission for the short stay detention centre to be built near Glasgow Airport.

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

"I welcome the Immigration Minister's announcement that the UK Government have abandoned their appeal on Renfrewshire Council's decision to refuse planning permission for the detention centre near Glasgow Airport. It was clear that Renfrewshire wanted no part in the UK Government's inhumane and ineffective policy towards immigration detention.

"The fact that the UK Government plan to review immigration detention internally, away from public view and without utilising external experts is telling. Shamefully, the UK is the only country in Europe which detains individuals without any time limit being in place. The Government should consult widely and listen to the views that have already been expressed and adopt a fairer and more humane approach towards immigration detention."
