Gavin Newlands MP expresses concern over Tory/DUP deal
June 26, 2017
Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has responded to the news that the Conservatives have struck a deal with the DUP to allow them to form a government at Westminster.
Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“This £1bn deal between the Conservatives and the DUP serves only one purpose and that’s to keep Theresa May in a job and in power.
“I am sure I’m not the only one who is concerned that the DUP are now at the heart of the UK Government. Their attitudes towards equality issues are especially worrying and this deal will cause alarm throughout the UK.
“Any notion that the UK is a ‘partnership of equals’ is now completely destroyed. This Tory UK Government has allocated a substantial amount of funding to one part of the UK in order to keep her already disjointed party in government. This is being done at the expense of providing the fair share of funding to Scotland and Wales.
“SNP MPs will demand Scotland gets it fair share of any funding that is going to Northern Ireland – the Scottish Tory MPs should join us in standing up for Scotland and making sure that we get our fair share.”
