Gavin Newlands MP criticises the MPs who have broken trust with constituents

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has criticised in Parliament those MP who have reported their constituents to the Home Office for deportations.

A recent freedom of information request revealed that on 482 occasions, MPs had reported undocumented migrants to the Home Office without their consent, putting their ability to live in the UK under threat.

Mr Newlands accused those MPs of breaking the trust of their constituents, making it less likely for some constituents to go and seek help from their MP.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“I take my responsibilities as a local Member of Parliament extremely seriously and I will try my hardest to help any constituent with any issue that they’re facing.

“The trust that has to exist between an MP and their constituents is extremely important as local people should feel at ease about raising any issue with their local parliamentarian. That’s why I am angry and disappointed that some MPs have broken that trust and referred their constituents to the Home Office for deportation without their consent. This is the same Home Office that has form for making life difficult for those who have been born elsewhere but now live in the UK.

“Whereas other MPs have broken their trust with their electorate, I will continue to strive to be an accessible MP who will help any local constituent with any issue that they may be facing.”
