Managing mental health during the festive season
Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has said we should take steps to support ourselves, and friends or family members who suffer from mental health problems during the festive season as research shows a third of people are too embarrassed to admit they feel lonely at Christmas, and a quarter of people feel unable to ask for help when struggling emotionally.
Mr Newlands has spoken about how the festive season can be a challenging time for people with mental ill-health and we should all take an active responsibility to look out for one another.
The MP has recommended anyone with concerns doesn't struggle alone, and seek the advice of mental health charities such as Mind.
The charity has said connecting with people, managing your alcohol intake, eating healthily, sleeping well and being active can be particularly beneficial.
Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:
“The festive season can be a challenging time for a number of reasons, particularly for those who suffer from poor mental health and this can be exacerbated when many feel that they can speak to anyone about it.
“The pressure to socialise with family members for example can be challenging, and often any old family issues can resurface. For people grieving for a lost loved one, this time of year can be particularly painful. Christmas can also be a financially challenging time and that also creates a lot of issues for people.
“Anyone from suffering from poor mental health should be helped to feel comfortable about sharing how they are feeling. They should not feel that they’re isolated and should seek out the necessary support. Friends and families can also play a huge role in checking up on those who may be going through a challenging time.
