Gavin Newlands MP calls for the Trump state visit to be cancelled

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has called for the Foreign Secretary to cancel the upcoming state visit by the US President Donald Trump following the President’s controversial Twitter tirades attacking the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, defending his intelligence in a string of bizarre tweets and retweeting Britain First’s videos.

Mr Trump is planning to visit the UK next month to officially open a new US embassy in London. A formal state visit, including a meeting with the Queen, as was suggested last year, is no longer expected to happen. Several protests against Trump have been organised to coincide with his visit.

Gavin Newlands MP commented:

“President Trump’s dangerous rhetoric, usually transmitted via Twitter, brings the office of the President of the United States into disrepute.

“His diplomatic pronouncements labelling foreign diplomats irrelevant and immaturely belittling another unstable leader in North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, highlight that Trump is like no other past, and hopefully future, President.

“Trump is no longer the simple joke figure he once was, and I agree with Hillary Clinton’s comments when she said that Trump poses ‘a clear and present danger to our country and to the world.’

“If he was any other world leader, the UK Government would be condemning and distancing themselves from his dangerous rhetoric rather than welcoming him with open arms. Instead of kowtowing to this ‘stable genius’, the UK government needs to speak up against his hate and cancel his visit.”
