Gavin Newlands MP retains Parliamentary Darts Championship

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has retained his title as parliamentary darts champion following his victory at the charity Parliamentary Darts Championship held during the PDC Darts World Championships at the Alexandra Palace, in London.

Mr Newlands – who also serves as the SNP Westminster Spokesperson for Sport – saw off competition from other parliamentarians on the night, including Tory MPs Nigel Adams MP, Nigel Mills MP and Labour MP, Toni Antoniazzi, in the final to retain the title which he first won last year.

Following Mr Newlands success, two local charities – Jubilee House and Team Layla - will receive a donation to help support their work.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“I’m delighted to win the tournament again which allows me to donate £1000 to great causes in Renfrewshire. I have long been an Ambassador for Jubilee House, a fantastic charity seeking to provide safe refuge for women and children fleeing domestic violence, an issue I have campaigned relentlessly on since my election.

“Layla Greene‘s health issues are absolutely heart-breaking. I’ve been following Layla’s fight against this dreadful disease and like everyone else who was willing her on I was gutted to read of her relapse. I’m heartened, but unsurprised, to see the community rallying around Layla and her family and I’m glad to be part of that effort. Two fantastic local causes which I would ask Paisley Daily Express readers, who are in a position to do so, to get behind in this, the season of giving.

As for the darts itself, let’s just say it was hardly a vintage display but what a great experience to be on stage at the Ally Pally again. It was also good, having seen off a Tory MP in last year’s final, to face-off against Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi in the final, both of us having beat Tories in the semi-final!

“To qualify for the final I had thrown 321 in 9 darts against 16 time World Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor but couldn’t get anywhere that form om the night but it’s the winning that counts not the taking part, or something like that!”
