Gavin Newlands leads efforts to improve support for single parents

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has joined a cross-party group that aims to improve support for single parents.

Mr Newlands has been elected to serve as one of the office bearers for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Single Parent Families. This group was set-up to campaign on the distinct challenges that single parents face, with this new group holding their official launch on Single Parent Day.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“Single parents face many additional challenges and I am proud to be working with parliamentarians on a cross-party basis to campaign on these issues.

“Securing employment opportunities can often be more difficult for single parents and that’s before you even consider childcare. It’s also alarming that even if they secure employment single parents are more likely to be in poverty. Therefore, it’s only right that a group that campaigns specifically on the rights of single parents exists in parliament.

“This cross-party group will help ensure that their voice is heard at Westminster and we will demand that all politicians consider the impact that any proposed legislation will have on single parent families."
