Gavin Newlands meets with St Mirren FC

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has visited St Mirren Football Club to formally congratulate them on winning the Scottish Championship.

Mr Newlands – who also serves as the SNP Westminster Spokesperson for Sport – met with Chief Executive, Tony Fitzpatrick and Gary Tracey to speak about how their preparations for next season’s campaign in Scotland’s top flight is progressing.

A discussion was also held on fan ownership and also on the range of community causes that St Mirren support across Renfrewshire.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“I was delighted to visit the club to congratulate Tony and everyone at St Mirren for their success at winning the Scottish Championship. Regardless of who you support, this was a fantastic accomplishment and everyone associated with St Mirren should be very proud of their success.

“As Chair of the Scottish Sport All Party Group, we also spoke about a number of issues including the success, thus far, of fan ownership.

“As a local MP I also heard from them about the work St Mirren do in local communities throughout Renfrewshire. I’ve always been aware of St Mirren’s commitment to working in the community, but even I was taken aback with the number of local causes that St Mirren, not only supports, but helps to organise, including football and dance competitions in the evenings and school holidays. They also support local charities, for example their regular collections for Renfrewshire Foodbank are critical to support those most in need.

“Congratulations to everyone at St Mirren!”
