Gavin Newlands MP appointed White Ribbon Scotland Ambassador

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has been appointed to a leadership role to help encourage other men to play their part in ending violence against women and girls.

The Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire North has been appointed as an Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland, the campaign to involve men in tackling violence against women.

In this role, Gavin will continue to use his influence to encourage other men to become involved in this campaign and also lobby for greater action to be taken to end gendered-based violence.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“Using my position as an MP to end gender-based violence is a mission and cause that I take very seriously. Shockingly, two women are killed each week at the hands of a partner or ex-partner and the #MeToo movement has highlighted that many women are abused in in their everyday lives.

“This abuse has to stop and it can stop if we all play our part. Men and boys have a vitally important role in ending the sexual, psychological and physical violence that many women and girls experience. White Ribbon Campaign is the group which encourages men to get involved by signing a simple pledge to never commit, excuse or stay silent about violence against women and then live up to these words.’

“I am proud to have been appointed as an Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland. I will be working closely with White Ribbon campaign to raise awareness of the scale and the horrors of violence against women. In doing so, I will be urging men to sign the White Ribbon pledge to help create a better society where women and girls feel safe.

Davy Thompson, Campaign Director for White Ribbon Scotland, said:

“I am delighted that Gavin has agreed to become an Ambassador for White Ribbon Scotland. He already does a lot of work to encourage other men to become involved in the campaign to end violence against women, and this new position will help him reach more men throughout Scotland. Our Ambassadors play an important role in our communities to challenge sexist attitudes and behaviours, helping to create a society that that we all want to see.”
