OVER 5 MILLION PEOPLE SIGN PETITION TO STOP BREXIT

THOUSANDS IN RENFREWSHIRE JOIN OVER 5 MILLION PEOPLE IN ANTI-BREXIT PETITION

Over 7,800 people in Paisley and Renfrewshire North have signed a petition calling for Article 50 to be revoked following the Prime Minister’s catastrophic handling of Brexit, which would mean the UK would stay in the EU.

The petition has gathered steam as Theresa May failed to get her deal through the House of Commons and has had to beg the European Union for an extension to the Article 50 period.

The SNP, alongside the English and Welsh Greens, Plaid Cymru, and the Liberal Democrats, have agreed on steps to secure a House of Commons vote on the revocation of Article 50.

In 2016, Renfrewshire voted by 64.8% to Remain in the European Union, higher than the Scottish average of 62%. Over 7600 people in Paisley and Renfrewshire North have now signed the petition calling for Article 50 to be completely revoked and for the UK to stay in the EU, joining over 5 million people across the UK who have also signed the petition.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, welcomed the developments:

“I am fully supportive of the petition and I encourage everyone to add their names.”

“Theresa May’s handling of Brexit has been an absolute disaster, but with all of the false promises sold to the public in 2016, it was always going to be.”

“The fact that now more than 5 million people have signed the petition speaks volumes. It clearly shows that the public does not want to go through with Brexit.

“We cannot be forced into a false choice between Theresa May’s deal and no deal, as either would be disastrous for Scotland, and Renfrewshire’s, economy. If the House of Commons cannot agree a way forward then Article 50 must be revoked.

“Scotland did not vote for Brexit and we should not be dragged out of the European Union against our will.

“People in my Constituency and across Scotland are rightly furious, and they deserve to be heard.”
