Gavin Newlands MP calls for continuation of funding for lifeline support service

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has met with Renfrewshire Family Support Group to learn more about the support they offer to people affected by family members’ substance abuse. The group’s funding will come to an end next year and they have struggled to secure more funding in order to continue their work.

The group meets in Bishop’s Court in Paisley and offers confidential support, training and one-to-one counselling to families. Their current funding from Renfrewshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership covers their rent costs and runs out in March 2017. Gavin Newlands MP commented: “I was grateful to be provided with the opportunity to visit Renfrewshire Family Support Group and find out more about the work they do. It is clear that they offer a lifeline service to the people coming to the group. They provide training that helps families cope with their loved ones’ substance abuse and equips them with the skills to help their loved ones to kick the habit.

"Drugs and alcohol abuse affect people at all levels of society and has a big impact on family members. It is clear that the group makes a big difference to the community, with people attending from all across Renfrewshire.”

“It is crucial that the group will be able to continue and I will be writing to ADP to ask them to reconsider their decision to stop funding Renfrewshire Family Support Group.”
