Gavin Newlands MP congratulates incoming Student President

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, has visited the Students’ Association of the University of the West of Scotland (SAUWS) to congratulate the incoming Student President on her election success.

Emma Shotter, who currently serves as the organisation’s Vice President for Education was elected earlier this year and will formally take up her new post in July.

Mr Newlands met with the President-elect to discuss the issues currently facing UWS students, and also to find out more about SAUWS’ priorities for the year ahead.

Gavin Newlands, SNP MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said:

“It was great to meet with Emma today and to formally congratulate her on being elected as the next Student President of UWS. I know first-hand how tough elections can be, so Emma deserves all the credit for pulling off a great victory.

“It was good to speak to Emma to find out what her priorities are for next year. From the increasing cost of attending the graduation ceremonies to the number of students doing unpaid internships, it’s clear that Emma has a plan in place on how she’ll improve the student experience for those studying at our local University.

“The students who study at UWS help enrich Renfrewshire, and I look forward to working with Emma over the coming year to help all those studying at our local university.”

Emma Shotter, Vice President of Education and President-Elect at SAUWS, said:

“It’s always great to see local MP’s engage with SAUWS and show a real interest in the issues affecting our students. I look forward to working with Gavin over the next year to ensure students at UWS are represented both locally and nationally.
