GAVIN IS SNP'S MAN AGAIN
MP Gavin Newlands is a winner– after local SNP members backed him as their standard-bearer at the next election.
A ballot of members across Paisley and Renfrewshire North endorsed Newlands as the party’s candidate as the chances of a snap General Election increase by the day.
Party chiefs began the process ahead of time due to the political uncertainty, and local members cast their votes last week, with Newlands confirmed as candidate on Friday.
The suspension of the UK Parliament means an election cannot be called while MPs are in their constituencies, but the starting pistol on the campaign is widely expected to be fired within weeks.
With a General Election on the horizon a victory for Newlands would be a history making third election win by the SNP in constituency in four years, but the MP is taking nothing for granted.
“I’m delighted to be re-selected as the SNP candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, and my thanks go to every SNP member who took part in the selection process.
“It is an honour and a privilege to represent our constituency as your MP, and alongside our SNP team across Renfrewshire, we will seek to again earn the electorate’s trust and endorsement at the General Election.
“We face a choice of two futures – between the chaos and chicanery overseen by Boris Johnson and his clique as they look to drag us out of the EU against our will, or a stable and progressive Scotland that works alongside our friends and allies around the world.
“My colleagues at Holyrood have a fantastic track record – scrapping tuition fees, building 70,000 affordable homes for rent, introducing the baby box, doubling nursery provision, protecting the bus pass, and much, much more. We’ve shown what Scotland’s capable of, but we could do so much more as a normal, independent country.
“I’m looking forward to the campaign proper beginning and taking the SNP’s positive message about Scotland’s future to every door in the constituency – and I also look forward to how other candidates will justify the shambles their parties have created at Westminster.”
